Woodlands Primary School and Nursery

Physical Education

PE and Games are taught as part of the integrated EYFS curriculum and as discrete subjects in KS1 and KS2 following the National Curriculum 2014 guidance. Please click on the links below to find out more.

EYFS

In Early Years PE is taught less formally within the context of the wider range of learning opportunities presented to the children rather than a discrete subject.

  • Children show good control and co‑ordination in large and small movements.
  • They move confidently in a range of ways, safely negotiating space.

KS1

  • Participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending.
  • Perform dances using simple movement patterns.

KS2

  • Play competitive games, modified where appropriate, such as football, netball, rounders, cricket, hockey, basketball, badminton and tennis, and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending.
  • Take part in gymnastics activities.
  • Take part in athletics activities.
  • Perform dances.
  • Take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team.
  • Swimming and water safety: take swimming instruction and undertake water safety training.

PE Provision and Delivery

Class teachers teach PE. Woodlands belongs to the Telford and Wrekin Sports Partnership. As part of this partnership, pupils have access to a wide range of specialist sports coaching. Teachers have access to support from PE specialist teachers to help improve curriculum delivery and the teaching of PE. Pupils have access to a wide range of competitive sporting activities organised by the sports partnership. Woodlands has a purpose built, multi use games pitch and an Under 11 FA standard football pitch. The school also has a multi-use games hall. Woodlands is part of the Sports and Community facilities on the Abraham Darby Campus. As part of this sports community Woodlands has access to the swimming pool at the attached leisure centre.

Our curriculum is carefully designed to ensure key knowledge and skills progress in a logical and sequenced way, thus enabling pupils to revisit previously taught content and to build upon it year on year. We use carefully structured progression documents to ensure that substantive and disciplinary knowledge and skills are clearly outlined and sequenced, thus enabling the children to know and remember more, as they move through school.

Intent

An engaging PE curriculum at Woodlands allows learners to realise their full potential and develop a lifelong interest in physical activity and sport. At Woodlands, we believe that regular physical activity can not only promote healthier lifestyles but also increase academic performance and the social and emotional well-being of our children. This will then lead to children who are able to develop the understanding and knowledge of the importance of staying fit and healthy and they will continue to be activity as they move through their lives. It will also foster social and teamwork skills by attending activities and competitions both in and outside of school. Think links nicely with our Secrets of Success theme here at Woodlands.

Implementation

PE is delivered for 2 hours per week at Woodlands with children in year 4 and 6 receiving 30-minute swimming lessons. There is a clear programme of PE coverage that the children will be taught through their time at Woodlands and by following a sequential and progressive programme (PE Pro), children are taught the knowledge and skills necessary, which are then built upon. At Woodlands, we pride ourselves on being inclusive and adaptable to our children in order to ensure they are expressing engaged and encouraged attitudes towards fitness.

Impact

The delivery of our PE curriculum by staff combined with the use of PE Pro, shows a progression in skills taught and highlights that the children receive high quality PE lessons weekly. The delivery of a rich curriculum means that there are significant benefits to children’s physical, social and emotional health. Furthermore, by children having access to both indoor and outdoor PE lesson time, there is a clear cognitive benefit as it is well known that PE enhances concentration, coordination and problem-solving skills. Finally, children are aware of the days that their PE lesson takes place, and this is evidenced by the children coming in in the correct kit. This overall leads to positive participation and enjoyment of fitness through increased engagement in PE lessons, competitions and activities.
