 January in Year 1

The children have been pushing themselves in all their learning this half term and are growing in independence when talking learning challenges.

Phonics

In Phonics, the children have been consolidating their set 2 sounds and learning their set 3 sounds.  They have been using this knowledge to read a wider range of words and are reading with greater fluency.

Below is a copy of the set 1,2 and 3 sounds.

Maths

The children have been learning their numbers to 50. They have been identifying numbers that are 1 more or 1 less than a given number. The children have also been learning that two-digit numbers are made up of tens and units. They have been using dienes, tens frames, counters and jotting to represent tens and units within numbers up to 50.

History

The children have been learning about Queen Victoria and the Victorian Era. They have researched and found out facts about life for children within the Victorian Era and have been comparing it to their own lives.

As part of their history learning, the children visited Blists Hill Victorian town to experience the homes, shops and factories from the Victorian Era and to find out more about life for children during that time.

February in Year 1

Maths

Children have continued to use Numbersense at the beginning of maths lessons and have been working hard on to develop their understanding of number and have been  concentrating on making and breaking the number 7.

The children have really enjoyed learning  to read, write and count numbers within 100 and have shown that they can represent numbers using both practical and pictorial resources.

Music

In Music, the children have really enjoyed learning about a wider range of music genres and have shown enthusiasm in listening to and appraising different songs.

PE

In PE, the children are continuing to develop their fundamental movement skills and have enjoyed learning the rules of some outdoor sports games.

Science

In science the children have gained new knowledge about animals, including humans. They have particularly enjoyed categorising animals and learning about what makes an animal a carnivore, herbivore or omnivore. The children have represented their findings through drawings, building, painting and by using Venn diagrams.

March in Year 1

Stay and Learn

We welcomed lots of adults from home into the year one classroom for stay and learn. The children showed off their amazing phonics skills with a speed sound lesson and then read their reading books with an adult. They then enjoyed sharing some of their lunchtime with their adult and demonstrated how lunchtimes are organised at Woodlands.

Maths

In maths the children have started to look at multiplication. We began by looking at equal groups and repeated addition. They then worked hard to learn about arrays and can practically build arrays to help them with their 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

Music

In music the children have been learning how to play the notes B and A on the recorder and been able to put these notes together to play different songs.

Geography.

In geography the children have been learning about the 7 continents. They have showed their learning in many ways including researching using the iPads, drawing, painting and writing.
