Autumn Curriculum Overview
January in Year 2
Year 2 have been very busy this term!
In literacy, the children have been writing character descriptions of Plague doctors and describing scenes from ‘Toby and the Great Fire of London’. The children interviewed each other to find information about The Great Plague. The children in phonics have been working hard reading books such as ‘Jade’s Party’ and ‘Vulture Culture’.
In maths, the children have been learning how to use their jottings to times and divide numbers. They have also used their knowledge of division to explore fractions. This week in maths, children have just moved on to learning about time. Year 2 have explored o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to on the clock.
In science, children have been learning about materials. They have explored materials that are absorbent and the suitability of materials for everyday objects.
In history, the children have been exploring The Great Plague and The Great Fire of London. They have learned how The Great Plague spread so quickly and all about the Plague doctors and compared them to doctors we have now.
February in Year 2
Again another busy month for Year 2.
In literacy, the children have been continuing to work on the text ‘Toby and the Great Fire of London’. The children have unpicked the text, looking at the language features and identifying ways to improve the vocabulary for their retell of the story.
In maths, the children have been learning how to read and write the time as well as 2D and 3D shape names and their properties.
The children’s Key instant recall facts are also being practised.

The children have had a lot of fun in their Design and Technology lesson. They had to design and make a healthy wrap. The children researched different wrap fillings, look at what a balanced diet looks like and the create their own wrap to make, safely chopped produce and of course the best….or not in some cases (there were some strange combinations) eat them!

March in Year 2
The children in Year 2 have been very busy this month.
In literacy, they have been writing instruction about Woodlands’ new lunchtime routine. The children told the instructions to the class verbally, then used instructional writing features to write detailed instructions.
In maths, the children have been exploring direction. They now know the clockwise and anticlockwise directions! The children have also been exploring money. They have looked at the different coins and notes and have added these up to make different amounts. They are now starting to explore how to find change from an amount of money.
In science, the children have been learning about Plants. The children went on a walk around school to find different plants. They have started to explore the lifecycle of plants, and how animals can help this.
