January in Year 3

During January the children in year 3 have been very busy writing their own poetry. They have listened to ‘What a Wonderful World’ and picked out the key features. After they thought about expanded noun phrases that could be used to describe different elements of nature. They used these ideas to create their own poem based on ‘What a Wonderful World’. Recently the children have discussed setting descriptions with a focus on Harry Potter. They worked together to create a description about Diagon Alley and have produced their independent piece about Hogwarts.

In maths, the children have worked on formal written methods for multiplication and division. They have had a focus on times tables to use to apply these to help them solve these calculations as well as solve problems. The children have worked practically initially before recording the written method in their books.

In science, the children have begun their work on light. They have investigated how light travel and how shadows are formed. Recently, they have investigated how to change the size of a shadow by moving the object closer to or further away from the object.

In Geography, the children have explored atlases to find out about the United Kingdom. They have located cities, rivers and mountain ranges. They have also used an OS map of the local area to look at what human and physical features that we have around school.

February in Year 3

During February the children have focused on Biographies. They have researched JK Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter Books and found out all about her life and career to date. They then planned and wrote a biography all about her and her life. After, the children researched David Attenborough and then wrote a biography of his life independently. They will be moving on to writing explanation texts about how to care for our planet linked to their work on David Attenborough.

In maths, the children have focused on fractions. They have discussed how a fraction is an equal part of a whole. Following on from this they have identified unit fractions of objects and numbers and non-unit fractions. The children then worked on adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator as well as problem solving.

In science, the children have continued their work on light, focusing on reflectivity and investigating which materials reflect the most light using a data logger. They have worked on using their scientific knowledge to plan fair tests and conclude their findings to investigations.

In geography, the children have learnt the difference between physical features and human features. They have then applied this knowledge to identify physical and human features of the UK.

March in Year 3

In Literacy, the children have worked on the book 'Here we are' by Oliver Jeffers. The book focuses on our planet and what we can do to look after it. After reading it, the children discussed how we can share this information with others and decided to write an explanation text about 'How to care for our planet'. During their writing, the children have focused on using co-ordinating and subordinating conjunctions to link their ideas in sentences. After, they have met with Miss Ferris, who looks after the school guinea pigs, who shared with them how to take care of a guinea pig and their needs. The children have used this information to write their own explanation text independently titled, 'How to care for a guinea pig'.

In maths, the children have completed their fraction work and moved on to focus on measure. They have learnt about measuring length in mm, cm and m. After,  the children have added and subtracted lengths as well as converting between different units of measure. They have applied this knowledge to solve problems.

In science, the children have begun learning about humans and animals. They have discussed the skeleton and how it is used for movement and protection. The children investigated the different types of joints they have in their body and how they allow different movements. Finally, they have looked at muscles and learnt that they work in pairs to allow movement. There was a lot of fun doing various exercises to work out which muscles we were using!
