January in Year 4
During January, Year 4 welcomed Parents/Carers in for Stay and Learn. We had a short discussion around online safety and the effect that posts online can have. The children also enjoyed showing off their knowledge as they logged into Times Table Rock Stars and completed their Soundcheck.
In Literacy, the children were introduced to a new fiction text, “There’s a Viking in my bed” by Jeremy Strong. They made predictions about the text, worked on their dictionary skills when exploring new vocabulary, developed positive attitudes towards reading and planned their own version of the story.
In Maths, the children focused on their times table knowledge, interpreting and plotting coordinates, ordering and comparing decimals, finding equivalent fractions, adding and subtracting fractions and converting between fractions and decimals.
In Science, the children continued their “States of Matter” unit, exploring the water cycle and participating in an experiment to observe that water changes state when it is heated or cooled.
In Personal Development, we started a new unit “Health and Wellbeing”, where the children discussed how to keep their teeth healthy, what relaxation feels like and that relaxation techniques can be used anywhere.
In History, the children placed historical events chronologically on a timeline and started to learn more about the Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Vikings.
In PE, the children enjoyed our “Dance” unit, thinking about moving in unison and following choreography. They also enjoyed the multi sports unit where we worked on our Rugby skills.
February in Year 4
During February, Year 4 have been exploring Sound in their Science lessons. The children have looked at how sound travels, the difference between pitch and volume and how they can change these and have also looked at the parts of the ear and how each part works to enable us to hear sound.
In Literacy, the children have written their own version of ‘There’s a Viking in my bed’ called ‘There’s a Viking in my school’. Additionally, they have also been exploring the text Norse Mythology for kids and writing their own character descriptions about Thor and Odin.
In Maths, the children have been focusing on their times tables knowledge, equivalent fractions, counting in hundredths, rounding to nearest 10, 100 and 1000 and ordering and comparing decimal numbers.
In Computing, the children have been using Paint to edit photographs by using the cropping tool, inserting images and changing the contrast of the image.
In Art, the children have been inspired by the creatures of the rainforests and have been drawing detailed sketches of interesting sections of one picture using a view finder. The children focussed on using different materials and tools to show texture.
In Music, the children have listened and appraised a piece of music by Bill Withers called ‘Lean on me’. The children played along side the piece on their recorders and then composed their own accompanying music to play along with it.
March in Year 4
During March, Year 4 enjoyed their trip to Enginuity. The children walked beautifully to and from the museum in Coalbrookdale and had a fantastic day spent creating artistic “Jitterbugs” in the workshop where they had to use their knowledge on circuits and exploring all the fun things that the museum had to offer.
In Literacy, the children analysed two different poems about Vikings, identifying the features and vocabulary within. The children learned about performance poetry and had a go at performing the poems to a group. The children were also introduced to a new fiction text, “The Lion and the Unicorn.” The children made predictions, explored and upleveled vocabulary and began writing descriptive sentences in preparation for a setting description.
In Maths, the children revised column addition and subtraction to be able to use the inverse operation and estimate answers, multiplied and divided by 10, 100 and 1000, converted between units of time, interpreted a calendar and an analogue clock.
In RE, the children learned about the Judeo-Christian, Hindu and Islamic creation stories and how they believe the world began. The children enjoyed retelling the stories in small groups to the rest of the class, with some choosing to include actions for effect.
In Science, the children were tasked by their favourite music artist to find the most appropriate material for ear defenders so that young listeners could enjoy their concerts without damaging their ears. The children participated in a practical enquiry to investigate which material was best for sound proofing and reported on their findings.
