Drama in Guided Reading

During whole class guided reading, we have been studying the poem Albert and the lion by Marriott Edgar. We predicted what the poem was going to be about from the picture. After reading the first 5 verses, we discussed the language and style of the poem, made predictions, clarified vocabulary and summarised events so far. We then focused on the character of Wallace and why the poet used specific vocabulary to describe his character. After, we read the rest of the poem and discussed the feelings that the poem evokes – with a focus on vocabulary and punctuation.  We also made personal reflections about the poem and the characters involved. Finally, we worked as a group to perform a section of the poem to an audience. During a performance we tried to use performance techniques (tone of voice, volume and action) to show my understanding and meaning to an audience and perform a section by heart.
