English Language, Reading and Writing

We are a “Get Reading. Keep Reading. Change Everything.” school.

We use the highly successful Read Write Inc. Phonics programme to teach our children to read, write and spell. Our children do well in the phonics screening check and by Year 2, the majority are fluent readers with the best chance of success in the KS1 tests.

Read Write Inc. Phonics, Fresh Start and Spelling are highly successful literacy programmes for 4-13 year-olds created by Ruth Miskin and published by Oxford University Press. The training and support from Ruth Miskin Training, rated Outstanding by the Department for Education, ensure the programmes have the best chance of success in schools.

The three Read Write Inc, programmes are carefully matched to the new curriculum (2014), giving your children the best chance of success in the national tests. They show teachers, teaching assistants and parents step-by-step how to teach all children to become fluent readers, confident speakers and willing writers.

Our school uses:

  • Letters and Sounds’ guidance for children when they first join nursery, until they are ready to progress to the Read Write Inc. Phonics programme.
  • Read Write Inc. Phonics for our children in Reception to Year 2 and for our children in Years 3 and 4 who need to catch up or consolidate.
  • Read Write Inc. Fresh Start for our children in Years 5 – 6 with a reading age of nine and below.
  • Read Write Inc Spelling for our children in Years 2 to 6.

Read Write Inc. Phonics is a comprehensive literacy programme, weaving decoding, comprehension, writing and spelling together seamlessly. Ruth Miskin developed the programme during her time as a head teacher in Tower Hamlets. She believes that in order for a school to be successful, every head teacher needs to adopt a consistent whole-school approach to teaching reading, writing and spelling. Fidelity to the teaching programme, rigorous assessment, tracking and one-to-one tutoring ensure that schools guarantee progress for every child. Read Write Inc. spelling gets every child spelling effortlessly. It is a stand-alone programme for children in Years 2 to Years 6 and has been specially created to meet the demands of the new national curriculum (2014) (children below year 2 learn spellings daily as part of their phonics lesson). This programme consists of 15 minutes a day, in short snappy sessions, fun tasks are used to fill the gaps quickly and effectively in children’s knowledge. To keep children engaged, aliens introduce spelling rules on an exciting online spelling planet and children complete quick-fire activities in their spelling log books. Progress is accurately recorded using practice tests allowing children to build confidence prior to statutory assessment and teachers learn how to move children on quickly.

Cross Curricular Literacy lessons are taught from year 2 – year 6 once children have finished the Read Write Inc. Phonics programme. These Literacy lessons are planned with a historical or geographical theme and are based around high quality texts. Children write for a range of different purposes across several genres which are taught following a consistent structure across school. Our cross curricular approach to Literacy encourages our children to make links, builds curiosity and fosters a passion for learning.

Initially children in Nursery – Year 1 learn the Read Write Inc. phonics handwriting phrases to support their letter formation before progressing onto use the cursive approach. Children have daily handwriting lessons, to ensure that all children have a consistent, legible handwriting style.

Reading Schemes

At Woodlands, we use a variety of differing reading schemes. There are many wonderful books to choose from, at Woodlands we know that one singular approach does not suit all reading styles, so we aim to provide a rich and varied offer of reading books to take home and share with family. We use the ‘Oxford book banding system’ to organise the reading level of all our reading scheme books to ensure that we have a consistent approach to providing reading books.

Examples of the schemes used in school:

Read Write Inc. Phonics books

Children who are on our Read Write Inc. phonics programme will have Read Write Inc. Phonics book bag books. These books are specifically matched to the sounds that the children have been taught in lessons at school and it matches their reading ability so they can read every word.

Children who have finished the Read Write Inc. phonics programme will bring home books from the other reading schemes below.
