Jigsaw class September update.

Welcome to the Jigsaw groups first update of the year.

We were really excited to welcome the children back and we loved hearing what they had been doing over the summer holidays.

We have been reading different books in our guided reading sessions to continue to develop our fluency and understanding of the texts. I have been really please to see how well the children have been able to access the texts we have selected.

Here are some of the titles we have looked at so far. The children have enjoyed reading about the different characters and the experiences they have.

In Literacy we have 2 groups that are following the Fresh Start RWI programme and a group that have bene following the Orange RWI books. We continue to focus on learning, recalling and using our phonic knowledge and red word knowledge to help us decode and read the texts. The children are also planning and writing sentences about what is happening in these texts.

In Maths, we have been focussing on understanding the value of numbers and digits and how we can order them, compare them and partition them. We have just started to look at the different ways we can add 2, 3 and 4 digit numbers using jottings, resources and more formal methods.

Here are some images of the children working in their maths lessons over the last few weeks.

In the Nurture group, during the afternoon session, we have welcomed some new members to the group. We have spent time considering the ways to keep ourselves safe whilst we are working in the forest school area as well as exploring the outside space. This has included climbing trees, mini beast hunting and meeting the guinea pigs who live there too. They have proved to be very popular with lots of the children. During the Nurture group sessions the staff support the children to develop and maintain positive relationships with each other, learn to work collaboratively and develop their own learning styles and interests. So far, we have been very lucky with the weather, enjoying plenty of Autumn sunshine!

Here are some images of the children learning.

Here the children are part of a circle time where they are encouraged to identify and share their feelings within the safety of the circle. The children enjoy selecting a coloured object that represents how they feel, before sharing it with the group.

Homework: A reminder that all Jigsaw children are expected to complete the homework they are set each week – this will include spellings and/or maths work. The spellings are linked to their RWI texts and the maths homework is practised each week before it is given to the children. We also ask that all children read and have comments in their reading diaries at least twice a week. Again, the children are provided with an appropriate book for their reading level. Every time the children have a reading comment, they receive a raffle ticket that is entered into a draw for a prize each term.
