Unit 1 and 2 Spellings

Our first spelling rule of year 5 is ‘words with silent letter b’

The words we are focusing on are as follows:

thumb

numb

crumb

lamb

debt

doubt

limb

climb

tomb

comb

subtle

bomb

We will also explore how these words change when we add suffixes to change their meaning. E.g. -er added to climb is climber.

Our second unit focuses on ‘words ending in -ible’

The spellings are:

terrible

possible

sensible

visible

legible

edible

reversible

credible

responsible

horrible

We will explore what happens when we remove the suffix to find the root word. E.g. sense is the root word or sensible.

Then we will look at what happens when different prefixes are added to the beginning of a word. E.g. -ir added to resistible becomes irresistible.
