What’s been happening in Year 1

Wow! What a great first half term we have had in Year 1. The children have settled into the new routines and have been keen to take part in all of their learning.

In Maths, the children have been exploring numbers to ten and how to represent them in words, numerals and objects. The children have been working hard to find the different ways to create a given number and have been representing their findings using the part whole diagram.

In Phonics, the children have been busy learning their speed sounds and reading their new phonics texts. They have already shown great progression in this area this half term with many of them moving up to the next group next half term.

In Project, they showed a clear interest in insects during our first couple of weeks. The children have been exploring what insects look like, how they work as a team and where they live. The children in Mrs Paterson’s project group have been thinking about how an insect’s eye works due to them looking different to our own. Before they explored this the children thought about the process of seeing with a human eye using drawings, loose parts and writing. In Mrs Braim’s project group the children have been thinking about where insects live. They have used recycled materials to design and build an insect home before beginning to think about how their insect homes were connected to each other.

We are looking forward to finding out where our theories will take us next half term!
