Year 4 December Update

December has been yet another busy month in school as well as spreading lots of Christmas cheer.

In literacy, we have focused our work around “Gangster Granny” written by David Williams. We have used the text to help use write character descriptions about the two main characters: Granny and Ben.

As mathematicians, we have built on our knowledge of column addition and subtraction and applied it to the inverse operation as well as using our previous rounding knowledge to estimate answer.

In Spanish, we have continued to develop our Spanish vocabulary by building on our knowledge of greetings and expressing feelings to count up to 20. We have definitely enjoyed singing along to all the Spanish songs to help us learn and remember our Spanish phrases.

This month, we have also become designers and manufactures with our design and technology project. First, we explored the different kind of lights that were already available, identifying the positives and negatives about each one. Looking at the power source, shape and design. From this, we designed our own torch thinking about the equipment we would need as well as thinking about our client and the purpose of the torch. We each came up with a specification to help us design a torch fit for purpose. Next, we manufactured our torch. For this we had to use all of our S.O.S skills as parts of it were extremely tricky and difficult. However, we all showed resilience and problem solving to overcome our many problems. Finally, we evaluated and reflected on our products, thinking about how we could improve them and whether they fit our specification.

Furthermore, we were also lucky enough to return to the pool for our swimming lessons. Everybody really enjoyed being back in the water. It was great to see everybody’s water confidence continue to grow as well as our swimming skills.
