Year 5 September news.

This month we have been settling back into school and Year 5 with our new routines and getting to know each other all over again. Through circle times and many activities, where we have had to work together as a team.

We have begun our work on our class theme Earth’s extreme. Discovering how the earth is made up of layers and natures great physical disasters Volcanoes and Earthquakes. What a time to be learning about Volcanoes when one has been erupting as we have been learning about them (La Palma). The children have found it fascinating to watch live feeds from the Canary Island.

During numeracy we have; read, wrote, order and compare numbers to at least 1 000 000 and determine the value of each digit. Used formal written methods for whole numbers with more than 4 digits, to add and subtract, as well as using a range of mental strategies.

All this and more……. Science, we have begun to investigate materials and their properties, looking at why different items are made out of the different materials, because of their suitability. In PE we have been learning how to play hockey as well as Gymnastics.

We have had two curriculum themed days this month, PSHE (Nutrition) and RE (Temptation and Forgiveness). The children took part in many activities, discussions and thought about how they can contribute to the word around them.
