Year 5 – September

What a fabulous start to the new school year!

This month, the children in year 5 have been learning about Queen Victoria and Victorian Shropshire in Literacy and History. They have investigated the chronology of the era, found out more about British monarch and identified the grammatical features of a biography, in preparation for writing their own biography on Queen Victoria.

During History this month, the children have organised a selection of British monarchs in chronological order on a timeline as well as historical events from around the world to get an idea of the perspective of when these events happened in comparison to the present day.

In Science the children have been investigating forces. At first, they discussed what they believed forces were and what their experience of forces around us are. Then they raised questions that they’d like to investigate during the topic. To then conducting experiments on gravity to support or refute Galileo and Archimedes’ theories and carrying out investigations on air resistance.

Attached is the children’s Spanish topics for this term, there are different games and activities to complete using the QR code on the sheet.

We have also been lucky enough to have a Cricket coach come into school to teach the children skills on how to play cricket.

The children spelling focus for this term are the units 1 – 4. Each unit focuses on a different spelling pattern and rule.

October update

This term we have focused our Literacy and Geography around, Extreme Earth learning about Volcanoes and Earthquakes, where we have been writing, Historical recounts (Pompeii’s volcanic eruption disaster) and  explanation texts all about what causes earthquakes.

To celebrate Black history month, We have been researching to gain information, using a range of skills from a variety of curriculum subjects on a significant black role model from the past, Nelson Mandela. Following their work, the children presented their findings in the form of a presentation to their peers and created a display for their peers around the school, which is displayed in the corridor.

In Science we investigated which material would make a great thermal insulator. They experimented with a range of materials and created a line graph from there findings.

Our next four units of spellings, Units 5 to 8 are as followed:

Unit 5

Words ending in -ibly and -ably

Unit 6

Words ending in -ent

Unit 7

Words ending in -ence

Unit 8

The ee sound spelt ei

The link will take you to some of the spelling words the children will be learning.

Throughout the Spring term, Year 5 will be going back in time.

During Literacy and History the children will be learning about, Conflict within the monarchies, focusing on Monarchs of Britain since 1066.

Our Literacy writing will be centred around gaining historical knowledge about Monarchs and the Victorian legacy, where the children will be writing biographies, explanation texts, setting descriptions and discursive debates.

In Numeracy the children will be learning about fractions, decimals, and percentages.

  • compare and order fractions whose denominators are all multiples of the same number
  • identify, name and write equivalent fractions of a given fraction, represented visually, including tenths and hundredths
  •  recognise mixed numbers and improper fractions and convert from one form to the other and write mathematical statements > 1 as a mixed number for example, 2/5 + 4/5 = 6/5 = 1 1/5
  •  add and subtract fractions with the same denominator and denominators that are multiples of the same number
  •  multiply proper fractions and mixed numbers by whole numbers, supported by materials and diagrams
  •  read and write decimal numbers as fractions [for example, 0.71 = 71/100 ]
  •  recognise and use thousandths and relate them to tenths, hundredths and decimal equivalents
  •  round decimals with two decimal places to the nearest whole number and to one decimal place
  •  read, write, order and compare numbers with up to three decimal places
  •  solve problems involving number up to three decimal places
  •  recognise the per cent symbol (%) and understand that per cent relates to ‘number of parts per hundred’, and write percentages as a fraction with denominator 100, and as a decimal
  •  solve problems which require knowing percentage and decimal equivalents of ½, ¼, 1/5, 2/5, 4/5 and those fractions with a denominator of a multiple of 10 or 25.

In Science the children will be covering, Forces then Earth and Space.

  • explain that unsupported objects fall towards the Earth because of the force of gravity acting between the Earth and the falling object
  •  identify the effects of air resistance, water resistance and friction, that act between moving surfaces
  •  recognise that some mechanisms, including levers, pulleys and gears, allow a smaller force to have a greater effect.
  • describe the movement of the Earth, and other planets, relative to the Sun in the solar system
  •  describe the movement of the Moon relative to the Earth
  •  describe the Sun, Earth and Moon as approximately spherical bodies
  •  use the idea of the Earth’s rotation to explain day and night and the apparent movement of the sun across the sky.

Hello and welcome back,

As we are not able to have our usual open evening this term I have attached a link to the power point, that we would have shared with you.

Any questions please ask via the class dojo system ( link below)

Open evening ppt

Homework will be sent out every Friday and due back in every Thursday morning. There will be one piece of Literacy (spelling or grammar based) and one piece of maths.

Alongside this, each term (September, January and April time) there will be a piece of project work set and will be due back in at the end of that half term (October, February and May)

Children will be expected to read often at home and have at least two comments in their diary each week.

Please support your child at home.

If you need additional homework sheets or need some advice please contact me via Dojo.
